What We Want

Since we are a rotating editorial board of approximately ten members, we annually discuss what we are looking for in the pieces we review. Here is a recent list to help you to understand how we arrived at the 2017 collection of voices.

We want:

  • unique voices, personality
  • from the heart truthfulness, no BS
  • interesting, diverse topics
  • variety
  • human condition
  • message
  • relevance
  • if there’s profanity, it should be authentic/useful
  • though we welcome all, we want student voices

We don’t want:

  • unwarranted verbosity, soporific texts or images
  • clichés, overdone messages, heavy-handed lectures
  • contrived or cutesy creations
  • themes (beyond our mini essays)
  • book-length manuscripts or collections
