Since we are a rotating editorial board of approximately ten members, we annually discuss what we are looking for in the pieces we review. Here is a recent list to help you to understand how we arrived at the 2017 collection of voices.
We want:
- unique voices, personality
- from the heart truthfulness, no BS
- interesting, diverse topics
- variety
- human condition
- message
- relevance
- if there’s profanity, it should be authentic/useful
- though we welcome all, we want student voices
We don’t want:
- unwarranted verbosity, soporific texts or images
- clichés, overdone messages, heavy-handed lectures
- contrived or cutesy creations
- themes (beyond our mini essays)
- book-length manuscripts or collections
